Summary

In 1923 the Irrigation Commission was formed in response to low produce prices. Prior to this Irrigation had been the responsibility of the Irrigation and Reclamation Works Department (1910 - 1923) which was responsible to the Commissioner of Crown Lands. In 1926 the Irrigation Commission was renamed the Irrigation and Drainage Commission before being abolished in 1931. Its functions were split across the Department of Lands (1930 - 1992) and the Engineering and Water Supply Department (1929 - 1995).
