Summary

The Geographical Society of New South Wales was founded in 1927 on the proposal of T. Griffith Taylor. It is a professional society whose members are geography academics, teachers, practising geographers from both the public and private spheres, and other interested members of the public. Objectives are: to encourage and promote geography in New South Wales and throughout Australia; to advocate on environmental and social issues in Australia; and to support geographical literacy and awareness, and inspire enthusiasm for geography. The Society has been represented on the National Committee for Geography of the Australian Academy of Science in Canberra since 1995, and the Geographical Names Board of New South Wales since its establishment in 1966. Since 1928 the Society has published Australian geographer, Australia's oldest academic geographical journal.
