Summary
Austin Doyle was a medical scientist internationally recognised for his research on hypertension and its management. After a period teaching in New Zealand, where his interest in hypertension was initially sparked, and the United Kingdom, he joined the University of Melbourne in 1957. From 1966 to 1985 he was Professor of Medicine at the Austin Hospital, a clinical school for the University. At the Hospital he established a department world-renowned as a centre for excellence in hypertension research and management. He belief was that teaching units should combine clinical practice with excellence in research. Many of his students had distinguished careers as professors or heads of department in Australia and overseas. After retiring in 1985, Doyle continued to serve as Dean of Graduate Studies at the Hospital and Senior Physician at St Vincent's Hospital, Melbourne.
