Summary

Roy Deicke CMG FTSE HonFIEAust, made an outstanding contribution to engineering in Queensland's sugar industry, fostered all phases of research and development in the industry and was known throughout the world for his achievements. For most of his working life he was associated with the industry in Bundaberg, rising to managing director and chairman of Bundaberg Sugar Co. Ltd. He was also chairman of the Queensland Industry Development Corporation (QIDC), chairman of the University of Queensland Foundation, chairman of the Royal Brisbane Hospital Research Foundation and the Board of Governor for the University of Queensland, and vice-president of the Committee for the Economic Development of Australia, as well as serving on many other technical associations.

In his positions as chairman and managing director of Bundaberg Sugar Company and chairman of the Sugar Research Ltd he was instrumental in fostering the careers of many young engineers in research and production engineering.

His achievements were acknowledged when he was appointed a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1981, elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences (and Engineering) in 1984, elected an Honorary Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia in 1987, and awarded an Honorary Doctor of Engineering, from the University of Queensland in 1990.
