Summary

After joining the Victorian Public Service as a Draughtsman on Railways in 1859, Shakespear was appointed a District Engineer for waterworks at Castlemaine in 1865, and supervised the construction of the Malmsbury Dam.

He was the Engineer for the Borough of Hawthorn in 1873, Emerald Hill in 1880, and for St. Kilda from 1883. Projects included: Major drainage of West St.Kilda, Middle Park and Prahran; Brighton Road from St.Kilda to Elsterwick; the 'Junction' at St.Kilda; and the 'Lower Esplanade' at St.Kilda.

He was a member of the Victorian Institute of Surveyors. He was also a Foundation member and Councillor of the Victorian Institution of Engineers in 1883 and its President in 1885.
