Summary

Between 1841 and 1867 the colony of South Australian had multiple entities referred to as offices or departments that were responsible for public works such as roads, bridges, water supply and other key public utilities. While the titles change it appears the key functions do not. The titles of the departments were as follows; Colonial Engineer's Office (1841 - 1852), Colonial Architects Department [I] (1852 - 1854), the Public Works Department (1854 - 1857), The Colonial Architects [II] Department (1854 - 1860) and The Engineer and Architect's Department (1860 - 1867). In 1867 the functions of Engineer and Architect were split across two new departments: The Engineer in Chief's Department (1867 - 1906) and The Architect in Chief's Department (1867 - 1960).
