Summary

Alfred Ernest Smith was the Chief Mechanical Engineer, Victorian Railways when he retired in 1928. He had been in the Victorian Railways service for 45 years, having started as a lad in the workshops at Williamstown. He designed a number of steam locomotive engines in Victoria around 1920, including the 2-8-2 goods engine and a heavy 3-cylinder 4-6-2 express engine, which was later streamlined for The Spirit of Progress.

In retirement, he was a keen builder of model engines, making model yachts for several Governors-General, and model engines that are in the collection at Museums Victoria.
