Summary

Charles Fawsitt was Professor of Chemistry, University of Sydney 1909-1946 and Dean of the Faculty of Science 1923-1929. Earlier he had lectured in metallurgical chemistry at Glasgow. In Sydney he expanded his department by including physical chemistry in the curriculum, and founded the chair of organic chemistry. While he conducted some research on corrosion and the reaction between iron and sulphuric acid, he spent considerable time encouraging the projects of his colleagues. Fawsitt actively participated in the wider scientific community, serving as President of the Royal Society of New South Wales and the Australian Chemical Institute. He was a foundation member of the Australian National Research Council and supported the Commonwealth Institute of Science and Industry as a means of fostering collaboration between academic and industry during WWI.
