Endocrinologist and Medical scientist

Summary

Lesley Campbell is an endocrinologist whose research focuses on clinical diabetes, appetite and metabolism. She has made major discoveries in the fields of obesity and insulin resistance. Investigations of type 2 diabetes have suggested genetic variation may indicate potential preventative strategies. With Edward Kraegen she developed a world-first artificial pancreas that could be used to experimentally study type 1 diabetes. Other research has been on Prader-Willi Syndrome, a genetic disorder associated with an insatiable appetite leading to obesity, behavioural problems and intellectual disability. For 25 years she was Director of the Diabetes Centre and Services at St Vincent's Hospital, Sydney. Campbell is active in professional organisations, being a founding member and President of the Australasian Society for the Study of Obesity, and council member of the Australian Diabetes Society.
