Parasitologist

Summary

Alex Maier is a parasitologist noted for pioneering studies that have led to major conceptual and methodological advances. Using functional genomic, cell biological and biochemical approaches, he examines the molecular machinery underlying key survival mechanisms of the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. His analysis of invasion mechanisms used by malaria parasites has contributed to vaccine field trials. Maier came to Australia in 2000 to the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, where he established the Malaria Functional Genomics Facility. He is now Professor in the Research School of Biology at the Australian National University. A Fellow of the Australian Societies for Microbiology and Parasitology, he has received several awards for his research and his educational endeavours.
