Summary
Gerhard Schreiber was a biochemist who made seminal discoveries on the synthesis and processing of proteins. Initial research was on hepatically synthesised plasma proteins and thyroid hormone transport proteins. In particular he studied albumin, continuing this work after moving to Melbourne in 1973 to become Professor of Biochemistry (Medical) at the University of Melbourne. Schreiber successfully sought collaborations with colleagues in other research organisations, including universities, CSIRO, the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research and the Victorian College of Pharmacy. A strong believer in networking, he joined professional associations including the Australian Biochemical Society (later the Australian Society of Biochemical and Molecular Biology). He also contributed to the formation of the first Lorne Protein Meeting, held in Lorne, Victoria, which has since been held annually.
