Summary
Marloes Nitert Dekker was a biochemist and medical scientist who made significant contributions in her work studying the role gut microbiome and food additives in maternal metabolism, placental function and pregnancy outcomes. She worked closely with scientists and clinicians at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospitals, integrating microbiome biology and clinical collaboration to address complications of pregnancy and their long-term metabolic consequences. Her later work extended to agriculture and climate change, and the influence of the microbiome on methane emissions in pregnant cows. From 2011 Dekker was a researcher at the Centre for Clinical Research and later the School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences at the University of Queensland. She was as respected as a teacher as she was a researcher. Her published output was over 100 scientific papers. In 2023 she was promoted to Associate Professor. Dekker was active in local professional organisations, including the Australian Society of Biochemical and Molecular Biology, the Endocrine society of Australia, the Australian Society of Medical Research and the Society of Obstetric Medicine of Australia and New Zealand.
