Summary
Jane Balme is an archaeologist who is recognised as an expert on early Indigenous groups and Australian archaeology. She became interested in the field while working for the Western Australian Museum at the Devil's Lair cave in southwest Australia. Her research focus has mainly been on subsistence and social organisation in Pleistocene Australia, the development of gendered social organisation, and archaeology as a discipline. She has worked across Australia including in New South Wales, the Northern Territory and Western Australia. Balme is Emerita Professor and Senior Research Fellow at the School of Social Sciences, University of Western Australia where she had been Professor of Archaeology.
