Summary
Lynn Batten was a mathematician known for her research into finite geometry, cryptography, and the classification of malware. She is remembered for her leadership in promoting mathematical sciences and cyber security, and for strongly defending academic standards. In her research, she made significant contributions to geometry, discrete mathematics and algebra, and their applications in cryptography, digital communications and optimisation. Her publications included over 135 papers and four books. Combinatorics of finite geometries (1986) is still considered a standard in the area. Batten's early career was as Associate Dean (Academic and Industrial research), University of Manitoba, Canada, and visiting professor at the University of Wollongong. In 2000 she became Professor of Mathematics at Deakin University. At the University she was a Member of the Academic Board and served on a number of the Board's committees. With colleagues she developed Deakin's Bachelor of Information Security degree in the School of Information Technology. In both Australia and Canada Batten made major contributions to further the status and participation of women in mathematics, to mathematics education, and to professional societies. She played a key role in the establishment the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI), serving on the Board until 2017. Batten also maintained a strong network of international collaborations and activities.
