Summary

Geoffrey McLachan is internationally recognised for his pioneering research in classification, and to the related domains of cluster analysis, machine learning and statistical inference. Much of his research has been directed to the theory and application of finite mixture models, particularly the expectation-maximisation (EM) algorithm. His methodological developments have application in many areas, including bioinformatics, biostatistics, flow cytometry, image analysis and survival analysis. He has published over 300 books and papers, some of which have become standard references. McLachlan joined the University of Queensland in 1974 and was appointed Professor of Statistics (a personal chair) in 1998. His wider contributions include serving as President of the Queensland Branch of the Statistical Society of Australia.
