Summary

George Bates, DipEE DipME FIEAust, was an electrical and mechanical engineer who rose through the ranks of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV), from a cadet engineer in the Latrobe Valley in 1951, to senior positions in engineering, administration and executive management, becoming the most senior executive in the organisation when he retired in 1993.

He was responsible for the resettlement of the Yallourn Township; he introduced project management to the SECV; and was the project manager of the first stage of the Loy Yang project. In his latter years, he presided over the major restructuring of the SECV, and its breakup under the Electricity Industry Act 1993, into three discrete units - Generation Victoria (GV), National Electricity (NE), and Electricity Services Victoria (ESV) - and subsequent corporatisation.

He took a leading role in the formation of the National Electricity Grid Management Council and following his retirement was appointed chairman of Power Net Victoria and director of Victoria Power Exchange.
