Summary

When Victoria became a colony separate from New South Wales in 1851 a number of government departments were established including the Surveyor-General's Department. The Surveyor-General's Department carried out functions related to geological surveying, land deeds, railways and "guardianship" of indigenous Australians. In 1857 the Surveyor-General's Department was became part of the Department of Crown Lands and Survey (1857 - 1983).
