Summary

The Tasmanian Government Railway (1872 - 1939) was established in 1867 when the Launceston and Western Railway Company running the Launceston and Deloraine line faced financial difficulty. The Tasmanian Government Railways (1872 - 1939) was involved in the construction, maintenance and operation of rail lines and trains across Tasmania until 1939 when it was replaced by the Transport Commission, Railway Branch (1939 - 1978).
