Abstract

Most of the advanced theory of automatic control systems assumes that a set of first order differential equations exist to describe the performance of the system. The steps involved in obtaining such a set of equations starting from a physical description of the system are given and are carried out for a mechanical and an electro-mechanical system. The similarity between the basic topological steps for mechanical and electrical systems is noted and a general rule for the topological treatment of any system is given. Comments are made about non-linear circuits and constraints which may be imposed on the behaviour of the system.
