- Abstract
Air traffic control is the term applied to that part of the ground organization of flying responsible for supervising the flow of air traffic. A steady rise in the number of aircraft operating has accentuated some of the difficulties of air traffic control.
This paper describes methods by which the problem can be studied and gives some examples of results obtained. The methods discussed as most likely to give useful results are operational analysis of the existing system, flight tests with new aids, theoretical treatment of the properties of a flow of air traffic and simulation experiments which take into account the part played by pilots, controllers, navigation aids and communications.
