Abstract

The method of specifying a weld by its linear dimensions or as a full fillet on a certain thickness of plate is unsatisfactory, and leads to inconsistent results, since it permits the variation of the welding method to such an extent that all the advantages of the flux covering of the electrode or of special properties in the welding wire may be lost. It has been shown that it is possible to vary the ductility from 2% to 22% elongation and the Izod impact value from 3 ft.-lb. to 40 ft.-lb. in welds made with different welding procedure with the same electrode.
For a given quality of electrode material, the quality of the weld is determined by the heat conditions under which it is deposited.
The quality of electric welds may be assured by the use of a procedure which controls the heat conditions to which the weld metal is submitted during deposition and cooling.
The mass of metal deposited in one run must be proportioned to the mass of parent metal adjacent to the weld which is capable of drawing heat from the weld.
The procedure suggested is devised to ensure an adequate standard of quality, consistent with economy, simplicity of workmanship and supervision, control of distortion, and ease of estimating and costing.
The suggested procedure entails the adoption of a standard length of run for each gauge of electrode and the limitation of the size of electrode in relation to the mass of the sections joined.
The Izod impact test has been found very valuable in the investigation of the quality of weld metals.
