Description

This paper, No. 1013, originated in the Melbourne Division of The Institution and was presented before a General Meeting of that Division on 19th July, 1949.
The author is Director of Civil Engineering, Railway Standardisation Division, Commonwealth Department of Fuel, Shipping and Transport. Brigadier Chapman was, from January, 1943 to November, 1945, Chief Superintendent of Design, Branch of the Master-General of the Ordnance, L.H.Q.

Abstract

This paper, in itself, is not claimed to be more than a brief summary of "tropic treatment" developments in Australia from 1941 to the present date. Climatic conditions, service conditions, destructive agencies, a brief history of the work, and the present position regarding investigations are briefly discussed.
The paper is intended as a reminder that the major part of the information collated or gained during these years is available for use, and is of potential value for increase in efficiency and decrease of wastage in future developments in tropical areas.
