This paper, No.1739, was presented before the Engineering Conference, 1964 in Canberra from 13th to 17th April, 1964. It was also presented before a meeting of The Institution of Civil Engineers in London on 2lst.April, 1964. A record of the discussion at both meetings will subsequently be published in The Journal.
The author T. B. Nicol CBE BE MIEAust was Engineer-in-Chief, 1949-1961, Metropolitan Water Sewerage and Drainage Board, Sydney.

- Abstract
Warragamba Dam is a straight concrete gravity wall built on sandstone foundations across the Warragamba River about 40 miles west of Sydney, Australia. Principal dimensions and data are:
Maximum height of concrete: 450ft.;
Volume of concrete: 1,610,000 cu. Yd.;
Length of crest: 1,150 ft.;
Max. depth of stored water: 340ft.;
Capacity of storage basin: 452,500 million gallons (1,665,000 ac. ft.);
Area of lake: 29 sq. miles;
Length of lake: 32½ miles;
Area of catchment: 3,383 sq. miles;
Spillway Capacity: 450,000 cusecs;
Population served (in conjunction with other dams) (1962): 2.45 million;
Area served (in conjunction with other dams): 680 sq. miles.Special features described in the paper are:
(a) The intensive geological and engineering investigation to determine the most suitable dam site;
(b) The sandstone foundation in which the rock had a Young's modulus of only about 500,000 lb./sq. in.;
(c) The provision for floods which had exceeded 400,000 cusecs.;
(d) The need to maintain supply to Sydney during the whole period of construction;
(e) The provision of a 50-M.W. hydro-electric unit for use when surplus water was available.The investigations, design and construction were carried out by the staff of the Sydney Metropolitan Water Sewerage & Drainage Board. Contractors were engaged to supply machinery, materials, etc., whilst consultants were commissioned to advise on the geology, structural designs, grouting, concrete, survey and models.
