This paper, No.757, originated in the Melbourne Division of The Institution, and was presented at General Meetings of the Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne Divisions. The author, Ian Langlands, MMechE BEE AMIEAust, is Officer in Charge, Section of Timber Mechanics, Division
of Forest Products, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research.

Subsequent to the presentation of the original paper, various discussions have taken place on its subject matter and a second Edition of the Handbook has been issued. In the light of the above, the author has made certain revisions to the text which is published herein in an abridged form.

Abstract

It is the purpose of this address to discuss the "Handbook of Structural Timber Design" recently issued by the Forest Products Division of the C.S.I.R. The purpose of this Handbook is to provide engineers with the basic information necessary for the design of timber structures.
