Description

Paper No.2691, presented at The Institution's Jubilee Engineering Conference, held in Sydney from 14th to 18th April, 1969.

The author is the Commissioner of the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Authority and has been associated with the Scheme since the initial studies.

Abstract

The paper describes the major changes in the layout, functions and unit characteristics of the Snowy Mountains Scheme as it will have been constructed, in comparison with those proposed by the Commonwealth-States Committee at the time the construction of the Scheme was decided upon. The major changes in the function of the Scheme were brought about by variations in the nature of the demand for the electricity systems supplied. The changes in layout were in many cases due to the discovery, on closer investigation, of ways in which more might be achieved at less cost. Technical improvements in design and construction played a large part in achieving lower construction costs than had been anticipated. Advances in the size and efficiency of turbines and generators made possible much larger units and lower operating costs.
