Summary

George Watkins was a pharmacist who, having arrived in Queensland in 1867, obtained a post as dispenser and assistant superintendent at the Benevolent Asylum, Dunich, on Stradbroke Island. During the time he spent on the Island he made a study of the indigenous people, and collected specimens of the local fauna and fauna. The plant specimens he sent to Frederick Bailey for identification. Having become registered as a pharmacist, he established his own business in central Brisbane. Watkins was a keen member of the Royal Society of Queensland, and particularly active in the Society's Field Naturalists' Section. His publications including a paper on the Aboriginal people of Stradbroke and the Moreton Islands and at least one article for The Chemist and Druggist of Australasia.
