Summary
The New South Wales Institute of Technology (NSWIT)was established in 1964 under an enabling Act passed by the New South Wales Parliament in 1940 to set up an Institution of Technology. Predecessors of the NSWIT included the Sydney Mechanics' School of Art, and the Working Men's College which was re-formed into the Sydney Technical College. In 1968 the NSWIT amalgamated with the New South Wales Institute of Business Studies: the law school, the first in Australia outside the university sector, was founded in 1976. NSWIT was granted university status under theUniversity of Technology, Sydney, Act of 1987. On 26 January 1988, the NSWIT formally became the University of Technology Sydney.
