- Abstract
From the Introduction page1:
"Women now make up the majority of those enrolling in Australian universities and in some institutions they are entering science courses in roughly equal numbers to men; a century ago, when the profession itself was in its infancy, they could be counted on the fingers of a hand. What were womens experiences of science during that time? What are the expectations of those studying or practising science today? What are the patterns, the threads that draw the continuum of past and present experience together? Are there inequalities which remain and, if so ' what should be done about them? Have women a particular contribution to make to the future of science? This book draws together eleven studies of women in Australian science over the past century to consider these questions; some of the work is biographical and historical, some is contemporary work from the social sciences and from philosophy. The centenary of the University of Melbourne's first woman science graduate prompted the collection, but the book rapidly spilled over into an investigationof some of the broader issues relating to women in Australian science as a whole."- Source
