Round timbers possess structural and cost advantages over other materials of construction and are extensively used for a variety of structures including pole lines. With proper design, and particularly if impregnated with preservative, they give very long service life. Many factors favour the use of preservative treatments, especially if the most readily obtainable species are naturally non-durable.
As a result of the establishment of commercial preservative treatment plants, and the availability of new data on the strength of round timbers of Australian species and their service life when impregnated with preservative, wasteful practices of the past can be eliminated and important cost advantage obtained. Factors influencing service life are considered. Basic. working stresses are derived, and modifying factors for these are discussed in such a way that the engineer can choose values most appropriate to each particular construction.
