- Abstract
It is sad to have to report the death of Brian Murphy. He died at home peacefully on November 29th after an illness extending over more than two years.
Brian was a stalwart of our Institution for a long period, until circumstances made it difficult for him to continue as such - but at no time did he lose his interest. He joined the Institution in 1949, became a Fellow in 1966 and was President of our Division in 1974, the centenary year. For several years from 1970 he was also a Federal Councillor.
Brian Murphy's professional career was mainly connected with the University of Melbourne, where he began a Lectureship in Surveying in 1955, and rising to head of the Department. He had graduated at the same school as Bachelor of Surveying in 1953 and Master of Surveying in 1960.
From 1959 to 1976 Brian gave distinguished service as a member of the Surveyors Board; and following that was a Councillor of the City of Hawthorn from 1977 to 1982.
He was also a long-standing leader in his church, and this was evident from what was said at the funeral service at the Immaculate Conception Church in Hawthorn. The very large number of people who attended the service was a fitting tribute to Brian, whose wife Pat and his five children have sustained the greatest loss.
