Abstract

The chemical reprocessing of one kilogram of uranium-233 to remove the thorium-228 content (approximately one milligram) is described. The process involved dissolution of fuel elements containing the uranium-233 oxide, separation and purification of the uranium-233 by liquid-liquid extraction, and reconversion to decontaminated oxide. The thorium-228 was removed successfully with 98 per cent recovery of the uranium present after dissolution.
