- Abstract
Every discovery in science may be regarded from two points of view; first, from the academic standpoint, whence consideration is given to it as a contribution to pure science, whence its value is estimated in terms of the gain in knowledge which it represents and in terms of the influence it has in promoting further increase in knowledge, and, secondly, from the practical standpoint, whence attention is given particularly to the applications of economic value arising from it.
Which is the more important aspect, to which we should give greater weight in deciding the relative importance of various discoveries is a matter over which individuals differ through prejudices arising from their
training and environment.
