This paper deals with the method of applying the theory of symmetrical components to the analysis of the performance of impedance relays of conventional design, when used for protection against ground faults. As a preliminary to this, the method of determining the correct impedance networks of any given system is discussed, under various operating conditions. The application is made to a portion of the Victorian State Electricity Commission's system which gives ample illustration of the principles involved.
