- Abstract
An outline of some of the theoretical aspects of traffic engineering and their practical applications and importance are discussed. The paper describes the history and development of the traffic engineering profession and discusses the various theoretical approaches that are being made by the engineer, the operations research scientist and the statistician to explain various traffic phenomena. Examples demonstrating current methods of overcoming practical problems are included.
