- Abstract
The mechanical extraction of juice from sugar cane is being investigated in Queensland by the use of experimental mills and the results have received world-wide attention. The work was started by the University of Queensland in 1952 and is partly supported by the Sugar Research Institute, Mackay, which also operates an experimental mill.
The mechanics of crushing, as at present understood, are set out in this paper, which gives a description of the physical properties of the cane, the basic theories of crushing between two rolls, and the results obtained from the experimental mills. Both the University two-roll mill and the Sugar Research Institute three-roll mill are described. The theory is compared, where possible, with the results from the University mill and it is stated that the three-roll mill exhibits the same trends.
The results, so far, are most encouraging and the investigations are continuing.
