Abstract

This paper reviews the development and use of Compression Ignition (C.I.) internal combustion engines as used in road transport vehicles, commencing with a brief historical outline of that form of engine, followed by more comprehensive data on modern engines. Some thought is then given to basic engine requirements, and consideration as to how this target can be reached.
