- Abstract
The paper describes an investigation of the service performance of 11-kV distribution arresters as judged by their ability to protect transformers and other equipment against lightning; also, the causes of arrester
failures which resulted in line outages were examined. Service experience and test results indicate that many of the installed arresters were deficient in both respects and that their location on pole transformer stations could be improved. The conclusions drawn are based on over 30,000 transformer-years of experience, test results on some 4,000 arresters recovered from service, and on a detailed study of over 400 transformer failures attributed to lightning.
