Abstract

Since 1960 research has been in progress in Victoria on surface wave aerials intended for high frequency radio communication. The design of an aerial of improved performance was believed to be a direct method by which propagation via the ionosphere could be enhanced during the prevailing period of depressed maximum usable frequencies which is associated with the minimum of the sun-spot cycle.
The principles of operation, the practical design and the measured performance of the new array are discussed.
