This paper describes the development of communication facilities to the sparsely settled north west of Western Australia, with particular reference to the recent extensions of the national telephone system to serve the area. It describes the difficulties faced by the communications engineer in designing an economic telephone system in an area where very great distances, very small population, severe climate and difficult terrain are encountered, and the solutions adopted by the Australian Post Office.
