Description

This paper, No.1089, originated in the Melbourne Division of The Institution and was submitted by the Division on 12/12/51. It is to be presented before a General Meeting of the Melbourne Division on 17th June, 1952.

The author, W. Thorn, MEE MIEAust, is Engineer for Production, State Blec:tricity Commission ef Victoria.

Abstract

This paper discusses:-
(a) the advantages of hydro-electric generation of electrical energy;
(b) the extent to which a supply authority requires to purchase new low load factor generating plant;
(c) the accepted method of using load duration curves to determine the firm capacity of low load factor hydro-electric plants and demonstrates that this method gives incorrect results;
(d) the value and cost of low load factor electrical energy and shows that the accepted method of evaluating low load factor hydro-electric schemes gives very inflated values, particularly when the firm capacity has been incorrectly assessed from the load duration curve;
(e) methods of assessing the value of low load factor hydro-electric schemes.
