Abstract

The purpose of this paper is not to add to the learning of those already learned. It has been written deliberately for the unlearned. If it thus transgresses the canons of the Institution, the excuse is offered that in this State the learned in this particular subject are few, and the unlearned many. The paper does not offer the solution of a problem, it states some of the difficulties attendant on the financially successful development of the water power resources of the State of New South Wales. The paper is intended to show that:-
(1) The hydro-electric resources of the State are not of great national importance, and should not be permitted to confuse the vital question of State Power Supply;
(2) The most important aspect of marginal hydro-electric proposals is the determination of the anticipated life of the plant in view of the high initial capital cost;
(3) A close examination of other sources of power supply is essential before a marginal hydro-electric scheme is undertaken.
