- Abstract
The year in the role of President is one of the great and unforgettable experiences in the life of an engineer. The wide contact with engineers in all callings and pursuits generates a feeling of optimism about the profession and its activities. Why? There are many possible reasons: the undoubted high standards of education and intellect within the profession; the dedication and commitment of members to the wider community goals; the almost overwhelming desire and impatience to improve things for the nation; the innate feeling of 'family' in a profession dedicated to contributing to and caring for the wellbeing of Australia. My preference over all of these is the pervasive sense of understanding and excitement among members of the roles, the responsibilities and the potential for good that is the profession of engineering. Thus, the topic of my address, the excitement of engineering.
