- Description
Retiring President's address by R. W. Parsons, OBE ME MIEAust, to the thirty-sixth Annual General Meeting of The Institution of Engineers, Australia. (At Canberra, on 17th April, 1956).
- Abstract
This address discusses the critical importance of engineering education in shaping the future of the profession and its role in societal and economic development. It highlights the challenges in designing curricula that balance scientific knowledge, technological application, and broader cultural education. The need for specialized training paths for engineers, distinguishing between research-focused university graduates and industry-oriented technologists, is emphasised. The establishment of separate Colleges of Technology offering three-year degree programs tailored to industry needs, alongside traditional university courses is advocated. Also stressed is the importance of attracting competent teaching staff, the role of government and industry in funding technical education, and the inclusion of management studies in postgraduate training. Character, integrity, and practical experience are the significant elements needed in shaping successful engineers.
