- Abstract
An investigation of the cause of the electric shocks,
experienced by toll collectors and car drivers at the Sydney Harbour Bridge toll, showed that rubber-tyred motor vehicles and bicycles were electrically charged as a result of charges generated by friction of the tyres on the road. This charging phenomenon was found. to be practically universal in fine weather on all good roads, but it was most marked on the new clean asphalt surface of the Bridge. This surface was such a good insulator that a car retained its charge for minutes after stopping whereas on concrete roads and many bitumen roads, it leaked away over the surface of the tyres in a few seconds after stopping. Measurements of the voltage acquired by a car on various roads and on the Bridge, were given. The processes. involved in the charging were considered, and calculations of the time of charging and discharge under various conditions roughly verified.
