- Abstract
Melbourne professor Richard Robson has won the Nobel Prize in chemistry alongside two other scientists for his work in developing metal-organic frameworks - a remarkable new way of organising matter that has been compared to Hermione Granger's magical handbag.
The frameworks can be used to turn desert air into water, separate out "forever chemicals" PFAS from water and suck carbon from the air.
"Some people thought it was a whole load of rubbish," Robson, a professor at the University of Melbourne, told the Nobel organisation after finding out he had won. "But it didn't turn out that way."
He said he planned to celebrate modestly.
