Abstract

A brief historical account of the origin of road research laboratories in the various States of Australia together with some details of certain types of research work that has been done during the last thirty years.

It has been prepared under the direction of the Conference of State Road Authorities of Australia, an association of the road authorities of the six States and the Commonwealth Department of Works, which meets regularly to consider road problems of common interest.

The paper describes work carried out by the road authorities individually and also investigations conducted conjointly by members of the Conference. It is divided into the following parts:-
1. History of the establishment of road research organisations and facilities in Australia;
2. Some details of work done;
3. Suggested likely future trends in research.
