- Abstract
The electrification of the Gippsland line - the first main line to be electrified in Australia - is a milestone in Australian railroading. The rapid development of the Latrobe Valley, resulting in greatly increased traffic on the line clearly indicated in 1947 that special steps must be taken as it would be quite impossible to handle the estimated traffic with steam operation on a single track.
