Abstract

Design elements for permanent underground openings in weak bedded rocks are outlined together with particular principles that apply to these types of excavations. An integrated approach to excavation, rock reinforcement and lining is given including typical details from actual projects. Performance observations from the Drakensberg and Poatina projects are given to illustrate the design principles proposed.
