Abstract

This paper elaborates on an important result implied in the author's "An Analysis of Maximum Run-Off and Rainfall Intensity" published in 1921, namely that the time period of rainfall to be used in computing the maximum rate of flow from an area is not the actual time from boundary to outlet, but a "virtual time" depending on the shape of the area quite apart from, though supplementary to, the effect of slope, soil characteristics, and such like factors affecting the rate of flow of water on the ground.
The sequence of events and the "virtual time" for certain regular areas are demonstrated, and the approximation to that of actual areas briefly discussed.
The conclusions emphasised are :-
(a) A knowledge of the shape of the area is necessary, as well as the superficies and surface characteristics, to enable one to predict, with reasonable accuracy, the sequence of water flow from an area.
(b) The maximum rate of run-off is given.by multiplying the "modified area" (i.e., the area multiplied by a coefficient of imperviousness) by the mean rainfall intensity for the "virtual time." Alternatively, the modified area could be multiplied by a factor depending on its shape to obtain a" virtual area" which should be used instead of the actual area to obtain the maximum run-off.
