Abstract

A study was carried out for the Cities Commission to assess the present position and to determine the measures necessary to ensure that the development of the proposed growth centre of Albury-Wodonga has no adverse effects upon the riverine environment of the River Murray. This paper describes the study and discusses the more important aspects, including the study of the aquatic environment, wastewater purification, water supply and pollution by stormwater drainage. It was found that further treatment of wastewater beyond secondary would be necessary, to protect adequately the downstream waters, and, after consideration of alternatives, land treatment was chosen as the most suitable. As to water supply for the complex, Lake Hume was considered the desirable source with treatment by direct filtration.
